There are several advantages to installing extending tow mirrors on your truck, even if you don't tow all the time:

  • Increased safety: The main benefit is a wider field of view. Standard mirrors leave large blind spots, especially on wider vehicles like trucks. Extending tow mirrors significantly reduce these blind spots, helping you see vehicles and obstacles next to you and behind your trailer.
  • Improved visibility when towing: Tow mirrors are designed specifically for towing. Their extending functionality allows you to adjust the mirror heads outward to see past the width of your trailer. This is crucial for safe lane changes and maneuvering.
  • Better visibility for everyday driving: Even without a trailer, the larger mirror surface of tow mirrors provides a wider view of the road beside and behind you. The convex blind spot mirrors on the bottom can also be very helpful for seeing smaller vehicles that might otherwise be hidden.
  • Easier maneuvering: The wider view can be very helpful in tight spaces, like parking lots or narrow roads. You'll have a better sense of the overall size of your truck and surrounding vehicles.

Some tow mirrors also offer additional features like turn signal indicators and heated glass, which can further improve safety and convenience.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Cost: Extending tow mirrors can be more expensive than standard mirrors.
  • Aesthetics: Some people find tow mirrors bulky and not visually appealing.
  • Width: Even when retracted, tow mirrors add width to your truck. This might be a concern for tight garages or car washes. (generally 4” each side)

Overall, installing extending tow mirrors is a great safety upgrade for your truck, especially if you plan on towing anything in the future. The increased visibility they provide can give you peace of mind on the road.

If you currently have the standard smaller mirrors, you can add HD tow mirrors on Model Years 2003-2013 without modifications, including upgrading to signals in the glass or housing even if you did not have them before. Our tow mirrors are built to be “Plug and Play”, meaning if you do not currently have signals in your standard mirrors, you can upgrade without any modifications. Starting in model year 2003 GM used the same wiring harness for all mirrors regardless of features on the specific vehicle being built on the assembly line.
