General Motors is evaluating 6 cars to determine if they will stop production in the coming years. GM has seen slow car sales over the last couple years. Many believe this to be because of low gas prices. As for Truck and SUV sales have stayed storng and had record breaking sales in the first quater of 2017. The cars under review are Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Sonic, Cadillac XTS, Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Impala and the Chevrolet Volt hybrid.
The Sales of General Motors cars have been in decline, but this could be a strategy to gain leverage during the contract negotiations with UAW for their new contracts in 2019. UAW President Dennis Williams said the UAW is in talks with Americas Big 3 auto makers General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler to keep jobs in the U.S. while keeping the plants running at full capacity. The Detroit-Hamtramck General Motor Plant Seems To be in the middle of many of these discussions. Hamtramck is the only GM owned automobile plant left inside of Detroit. This plant is responsible for producing the Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Impala and Buick LaCrosse. If these models are cut from the line up it could very result in more layoffs and another blow to Michigans economy.
The Union Of Auto Workers has been fighting to bring more models back to being made in America. They are in the middle of rolling out a Buy American Ad Campaign in a attempt to boost american made products and bring more auto manufacturing jobs back to struggling plants inside the U.S.
